Northern Lights on Iceland

The Natural History Museum of the University of Alaska Fairbanks has a Northern Lights room where you can actually hear the Northern lights. The sound they make – depending on intensity – sounds like an “electrical” hiss or bristling. And, since I got to see the Norther n Lights for myself for the first time – at the Yelow Dog Lodge up in the Wilderness of the Northern Territories in Canada – I’m sure that you can fell them, too.

One of the most captivating natural wonders above our planet dazzles us with a colour range from light white blush through dashing greens, deep blues to striking crimsons. The Northern Lights appear in wandering, wobbling lines, turn in circles and the most magic is, when they wave down to bild curtains or pillars of magical colourful light. Some winter nights you can barely see them and in others the night sky explodes in bright dancing whirls.

Spotting the Aurora Borealis on our first night in Reykjavik

Iceland greeted us with Northern lights already on our first night in Reykjavik and we were lucky to see more lights along our route around the island. All Aurora photos are captured with an Android Smartphone and without tripod. Amazingly it went pretty well, but see for yourself:

When can you see the Northern Lights?

They do appear in our night skies all year round – sometimes more or less intense. But, you need darkness to really see them. So – within the Northern hemisphere, we can mostly spot them from late August to early April.

Did you know that Auroras also appear in the southern skies? Dancing around the southern polar region they are called “Aurora Australis” and spread their magic in the nights of the Southern Hemisphere.
